(That's 'holiday wishes' in Chinese!)
I'm a Bostonian teaching abroad for one year in Gongyi, Henan. It's a rather out-of-the-way city, without many foreigners or foreign influence. It's nice to be more immersed in modern Chinese culture without those pesky foreigners everywhere, but it can make a girl feel a bit cut off. And that's where the wishes come in.
1) I would really, really like a letter. Or a postcard. Tell me about your hometown, or your pet dog. Anything. I don't get much mail, just the occasional care package from home, and every piece of mail I get brightens my day.

2) Similarly, I'd love a surprise. I'm not picky, and I have a well-developed sense of whimsy.

3) Queer-positive anything. Websites, blogs, magnets, hankies, inspirational quotes, whatever. I know of one other not-straight person in this city of one million, and I haven't even met her. I know there are others here, but having a little emotional support never hurt anyone.

4) Good fanfic recs. I read Harry Potter, pretty much any pairing, but I prefer femmeslash and slashyslash. I like multi-chaptered fics, but my only requirement is impeccable grammar.

5) Music! I like country, europop, trance, folk, classical, techno, fado, bluegrass, industrial, metal (German)... I'll try anything. I've been on a country/europop kick for a while though (weird, weird mix), so if you have a favorite track in either genre, let me know!

Thank you so much! If you leave a comment or PM me I'll email you my address, and if you tell me yours I'll definitely send something back. Zaijian!

Reminder to UKGQMFs

Thought I should probably post a message here about this. The new series of Top Gear starts tonight, and as if you needed any more reason to watch it:

The Star In A Reasonable Priced Car on Top Gear tonight is our very own hunk of Aussie man meat...

ERIC BANA

^ My face is like this right now, ngl

You know the interview is going to be glorious: "FIRE EVERYTHING" "...IN THE WORRRRLD"

So remember to turn on BBC 2 at 9pm, not the normal 8. Just switch over when you see Lloyd get kicked off X Factor.

THE SUNDAY SCREENING!

Here is the weekly post for the community to rewatch The Original Series of Star Trek and discuss it in the comments. This week's episode is...

Balance of Terror

Feel free to watch the episode today, or if you have already watched it, discuss it with other community members. If you're not sure what to write, but want to comment, perhaps consider questions such as:

What was your favourite part of the episode? Why?
What was your least favourite part? Why?
Who was your favourite character in the episode? Why?
Who was your least favourite character in the episode? Why?
What issues did you find interesting? Why?
What did you find completely ridiculous/worthy of lulz? Why?

As we are following Memory Alpha's episode order, next Sunday we will be watching What Are Little Girls Made Of?.

As a reminder, all three series are available to download in this community.

MOD: As a modly sidenote, I am now back from holiday, so if people need to contact me about anything community-wise, normal service is resumed. However, my laptop has fallen over, I think for good, so I'm not going to be online as much until I can save to buy a new one. So if you have any concerns, they're probably best raised with the other mods if you want a swift asnwer. Thanks guys. ♥

Jennifer Morrison TIEMZ TWO

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 12:15 AM
The first week of November, Jennifer Morrison (Winona Kirk) made 2 appearances with boyfriend Amaury Nolasco. First, at a shopping event sponsored by Lucky Magazine and second at the 25th Annual Artios Awards.

Amaury Nolasco and Jennifer Morrison attend the 6th Annual Lucky Shops hosted by Lucky Magazine at Metropolitan Pavilion on November 5, 2009 in New York City.

Jennifer Morrison poses at the 25th Annual Artios Awards at The Times Center on November 2, 2009 in New York City.

The Artios Awards recognize originality, creativity and quality in casting in film, television and theater. It should be worth mentioning that Star Trek's casting directors (April Webster, Alyssa Weisberg) won for their category. I freaking concur. Ladies, you had an intense challenge. And, you picked perfectly.

I will never get over how perfect her hair and skin are. She just glows. Gorgeous.

I am almost caught up!

Episode 336: Initial Encounter with Denizens of Level 1 Entry Corridor

A good GM will tailor the challenges to the characters.

By "tailor", we mean make the challenges able to exploit any weaknesses the characters have.

By "weaknesses", we mean any feature that pretty much applies to any human (or alien) being.

And by "challenges" we mean deadly threats.

Leonard Nimoy Interview

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 6:09 PM

If Leonard Nimoy’s acting work had been limited to that deliriously crazy music video for “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins,” he’d probably still be celebrated by a lot of us. Alas, in a career that spans seven decades, Nimoy has achieved a status far beyond accidental cult-kitsch pop-stardom, even if he did direct Three Men and a Baby. Playing the half-human/half-Vulcan Spock in the original Star Trek (and in J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek reboot last summer), he used an iconic mix of logical stoicism and quiet, pained loneliness to bring to vivid life the struggle of a character grappling with his identity and his destiny. He was also in two of the best Simpsons episodes ever. I talked with the Boston-born Nimoy about Star Trek, ghosts, and Barack Obama when he called from Los Angeles last week.

Do you meet a lot of Three Men and a Baby fans?

Once in a while. The strange thing about Three Men and a Baby was that the question was always, “What’s the story about the ghost in the movie?” [I.e., what looks like a window reflection of the Ted Danson cardboard-cutout standee.] People want to know what that’s about. There was a lady who said her son died in that room — which was very good for box office but was a total accident and had nothing to do with any ghost.Read more... )
